LAWRENCE — The University of Kanas community is mourning the death James Sterbenz, professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science. He died Feb. 25 in Lawrence.

“Professor Sterbenz was a dedicated scholar whose work on computer networks attracted attention far beyond KU,” said Chancellor Douglas A. Girod. “On behalf of our entire university, I offer my sincere condolences to his family, his friends and to all his colleagues who knew him at the KU School of Engineering.”

In 2005, Sterbenz joined the School of Engineering, where his work centered on computer networks. He was promoted to full professor in 2014.

Last year, he was part of a research team that received funding from the National Security Agency to shore up the cybersecurity of the Internet of Things — devices like smart TVs and virtual assistants like Amazon’s Alexa that connect to the internet.

Sterbenz also was a member of the KU Open Access Advisory Board, which works to shape open access policy and practice at the university to broaden the reach of faculty research.

“He mentored many graduate students, was active in teaching and research, and had a great dedication to the profession,” said Arvin Agah, dean of the School of Engineering. “We are saddened by the loss. He will be missed.”

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2211 Inverness Drive. A visitation will precede at 3 p.m.
