LAWRENCE — The call for proposals for the 10th round of Rocket Grants — a program that supports innovative, artist-driven projects outside of established art venues within the Kansas City area — opens today. Artists are encouraged to attend an informational session at the Spencer Museum of Art from noon to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, to learn more about the program and application process.

The Rocket Grants program is a partnership of the Spencer Museum and the Charlotte Street Foundation with funding provided by the Andy Warhol Foundation of the Visual Arts. This round marks the 10th year of the partnership, which has awarded $452,000 to 92 cross-disciplinary projects by more than 230 artists since 2010.

“Supporting the creation of new work is a form of stewarding art and encouraging artists. It has been our great pleasure to partner with Charlotte Street for 10 years to support new and innovative work by artists of our region,” Spencer Director Saralyn Reece Hardy said.

At the Jan. 20 event, Rocket Grants Program Coordinator Julia Cole will discuss the application process, budget tips and the types of projects that the program funds. 2018 Rocket Grants juror Shannon Criss and 2018 Rocket Grants recipient John Sebelius will also be at the event to share their insights on the application process.

“The Charlotte Street Foundation and Spencer Museum of Art at KU are proud to have shaped and implemented a program that has consistently championed artistic risk, excellence and collaboration in venues that engage new kinds of audiences, provoke alternative ideas and build community,” Cole said.

The application window for this round of funding is Jan. 14-March 11. For more information about the Rocket Grants program, visit http://rocketgrants.org/.
