University community mourns death of Steve Evans, lecturer in English

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas community is mourning the death of Steve Evans, a lecturer in the Department of English. Evans, 69, died Feb. 26.

“Stephen Evans was a proud Jayhawk and a dedicated teacher who inspired thousands of our English students during his tenure at KU, and I am deeply saddened to learn of his death,” said Chancellor Douglas A. Girod. “On behalf of the entire university, I express my sincere condolences to his family, friends, students and KU colleagues.”

Evans began his teaching career at KU in 1974. His course topics included Shakespeare, American Indians, technical writing, advanced composition and others. He was twice honored as the English department’s Outstanding Instructor.

“Steve Evans was a gracious colleague and a dedicated teacher who conveyed to countless students a passion for literature and good writing,” said Laura Mielke, associate chair of the Department of English. “I will miss our hallway conversations and Steve’s many acts of kindness.”

Visitation is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 3, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, 601 Indiana St. in Lawrence.
