KU announce Student Employee of the Year

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas has held a ceremony and recognized the Student Employee of the Year for the 2016-17 academic year. The Student Employee of the Year award honors degree-seeking students who are currently enrolled at KU. This award was established to recognize student employees who embody service excellence, dedication, and whose academic achievements remain stellar.
 
The ceremony took place April 11 in the Kansas Union. The Student Employee of the Year title was awarded to Yash Patel, an employee at Watkins Health Center from Lawrence, who received an engraved plaque and a $500 award.
 
Finalists for the award included Grant Godfrey, Topeka, of the Department of Aerospace Engineering; Lauren Hoerner, Wichita, of the School of Business-management area, Madison Byers, Overland Park, of KU Dining Services, and Mikaela Dorshorst, Oberlin, of pharmacy practice.
 
Each of the five finalists received a brass Jayhawk and was called to the stage with their nominating supervisor who spoke to the audience about the student's contribution to their department and why the student was nominated.
 
All 39 nominees for the award were called to the stage and received a Jayhawk pin and certificate of recognition.
 
Vice Provost DeAngela Burns-Wallace spoke during the ceremony about the importance of student employees at KU and building skills that will benefit student employees in their careers after college. Student Body President Stephonn Alcorn also spoke and recognized students for mastering the balance of school, work, family and friends.
