Special education professor recognized with AERA’s Early Career Award on Research


LAWRENCE – Subini Annamma, assistant professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Kansas, has been selected to receive the 2017 Early Career Award for research on the social contexts of education, granted by the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Division G. 

This award is to recognize a scholar who has conducted a distinguished program of cumulative educational research in any field of educational inquiry within the first decade following receipt of their doctoral degree.

The AERA Early Career Award for research will be presented, among other awards, at the Awards Luncheon during the 2017 Annual Meeting in San Antonio, which will be April 27 – May 1, 2017.

“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Annamma as a part of our faculty here at KU,” said Elizabeth Kozleski, chair of the Department of Special Education. “This Early Career Award recognizes her research and dedicated efforts focused on disability and race.” 

Annamma received her doctorate in special education in 2013 from the University of Colorado-Boulder and has contributed to the field through her research on increasing access to equitable education for historically marginalized students and communities, particularly students with disabilities. She has 12 publications in peer-reviewed journals, nine book chapters, and she has also edited two books.

Annamma is active in professional organizations, collaborates with numerous colleagues, and has mentored and advised graduate students. She served as an associate editor of International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education and is currently on the editorial board of Multiple Voices for Ethnically Diverse Exceptional Learners. Annamma was also the 2013 recipient of the AERA Dissertation Minority Fellowship in Education Research Award.

The Department of Special Education is housed in the KU School of Education. It is a nationally ranked school, preparing educators and health/sport/exercise professionals as leaders.
