KU announces April Employees of the Month

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas has announced the April Employees of the Month:

Lieschen Mast
Lieschen Mast

Name: Lieschen Mast

Title: Executive associate of Enrollment Management

What that means: Lieschen Mast oversees Enrollment Management facilities, provides onboarding and termination of internal resources for all employees, and she serves as a key point of contact for all staff. Mast was originally hired as an administrative assistant to manage calendars and perform administrative duties. She rapidly outstripped these responsibilities, working above and beyond her job description. Mast took the initiative to learn Tableau and Rapid Insight, software that she has used in service and for the benefit of her unit. Her self-taught knowledge and skills of data visualization has been instrumental in framing new initiatives.

Notable: In the last year, Mast oversaw the half-million-dollar renovation of the KU Visitor Center. Along with the renovation, she coordinated moving staff to St. Andrews and out of McCollum Hall. Mast frequently realigned her work schedule to meet with Facilities Services, Design and Construction Management, and outside vendors who were subcontracting the project. The project had concrete deadlines and a concrete budget. She moved four offices and 120 staff in and out of spaces in multiple configurations.

Mast does a great job of acknowledging the requests and needs of staff and provides solutions that improve the work environment for all. Mast interacts well with everyone she comes into contact with, both inside her unit and across campus. She facilitates projects so that staff can focus on the mission of Enrollment Management rather than mundane business.

Patrick Stalcup
Patrick Stalcup

Patrick Stalcup

Title: Boiler technician, Facilities Services

What that means: There are more than 180 boilers on campus, and Stalcup’s duties include keeping these boilers running.  He troubleshoots problems, provides maintenance when needed, runs tests and adds chemicals to ensure the water going to the boilers maintains acceptable levels.  During summer of 2015, Stalcup was the only boiler technician working on all 180 boilers.  Boilers are relied upon throughout the summer for hot water, maintaining heat to labs and reheat systems.

Notable: Stalcup does exceptional work while he is at work, but even when he is not at work he can be reached at any time for questions related to the boiler systems.  He is always willing to come in if needed to make sure systems are functioning as they should be.  Stalcup can be relied upon to answer any boiler questions as well as come in and fix problems related to boilers, but in addition to that he remains on the plumbers on-call list.  Every two months Stalcup responds to plumbing emergencies on top of being on call for the boilers.

Stalcup works well with everyone and has taken the initiative to train anyone new to the boiler trade and bring them up to speed on processes and expectations.  Stalcup is really a unit unto himself.  Even with the independent work he does, he keeps his supervisor informed, always follows through on tasks, and is conscientious of his department and his customers.  As the only person at one time who could do his job he makes every effort to make sure there is little to no disruption of scheduled maintenance to the boilers.
