LAWRENCE – The University of Kansas has found that Kappa Sigma fraternity violated the Student Code of Rights and Responsibilities and has placed the fraternity on probation for two years.

The sanctions imposed follow an investigation of reports of sexual assault at the fraternity the weekend of Sept. 27, 2014, and are in addition to investigations of individual members.

Sanctions as part of Kappa Sigma’s probation include:

  • No alcohol in the chapter house
  • A requirement that the fraternity turn over to the university materials related to its internal investigation that can be legally provided
  • A requirement that all new members and members report any suspected sexual assault or harassment to the university, with individuals and/or the fraternity as a whole being subject to sanctions if they fail to report
  • Multiple, mandatory sexual assault and harassment prevention and education trainings for all members and new members over the course of 2015 and 2016.

Failure to meet the conditions of probation will result in additional sanctions for the fraternity, and the sanctions set forth as part of this action do not take the place of or preclude actions against individual students. Further sanctions are outlined in a letter from Tammara Durham, vice provost for student affairs, to the fraternity.
