KUIC to host presentation for researchers interested in company formation

LAWRENCE – The University of Kansas continues to encourage its researchers to become entrepreneurs, which could include starting a new business.

With this in mind, KU will host a presentation titled “Top Ten Issues Faced by Every Early Stage Company” from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, in Nichols Hall.

The presentation will introduce KU researchers from all academic areas to the basics of starting a company. Topics will include the formation and funding of early stage companies, managing and licensing intellectual property, and the Security and Exchange Commission’s position on public solicitation, crowd-funding and impact investing.

The event is sponsored by University of Kansas Innovation & Collaboration (KUIC) – formerly the University of Kansas Center for Technology Commercialization. Kathleen Swan and Nikki Murray of Quarles & Brady LLP will lead the presentation.

“Entrepreneurship is a key component of KU's strategic plan, Bold Aspirations,” said Julie Goonewardene, KUIC president and associate vice chancellor for innovation and entrepreneurship at KU. “We’re encouraging an entrepreneurial mindset among our faculty, whether they’re in the humanities, life sciences, education, human development or any other field. We want them to be thinking about starting companies and translating their discoveries into new products that change the world.”

There are currently 24 active startup companies based on KU research spanning various areas such as education and social sciences, information and telecommunication technology, and the life sciences.

There is no charge to attend the event, and lunch will be provided – but seating is limited. Please register by Friday, Sept. 6, by emailing Abbey Liljedahl at abbeykl@ku.edu.

Visitor parking is available East of Nichols Hall on Constant Avenue. A map is available here.
