Political scientist can discuss Supreme Court decisions on gay marriage

LAWRENCE — Don Haider-Markel, a professor of political science at the University of Kansas, is available to discuss Wednesday’s Supreme Court decisions on gay marriage.
 
HAIDER-MARKEL CAN DISCUSS: Any topics related to the federal Defense of Marriage Act and Proposition 8 cases, including what the decisions could mean for gay marriage policies nationwide and how different states might handle the rulings. Haider-Markel was among a group of 13 political scientists who submitted amicus curiae briefs for both cases.

Haider-Markel is chair of the Department of Political Science and a highly regarded scholar whose research spans political science, criminal justice, environmental issues, psychology and sociology. His body of work focuses on the way that minorities — particularly women, gays and African-Americans — are represented in the American political system and how those groups organize to voice their concerns. His 2010 book, “Out and Running,” examines the role of candidates’ sexual orientation in state legislative elections and the subsequent influence of gay and lesbian legislators on state policy.
