College rewards undergraduates for academic excellence

LAWRENCE — The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences selected 12 recipients for its annual undergraduate student awards in recognition of academic achievement.

Awards and scholarships are made possible by gifts to KU Endowment from alumni and friends.

The scholarship and award recipients are listed below by hometown, level in school, major or majors and award received. Students must be studying in the College to be eligible.

  • Erin Calhoun, Naperville, Ill., freshman, pre-medicine, Veta B. Lear Award, for a freshman with a 4.0 grade-point average during his or her first semester.
  • Aubrey Deegan, Wichita, senior, human biology/speech-language-hearing/pre-medicine, Van Eekeren Family Scholarship.
  • Dennin Dusek, Hutchinson, freshman, biology/pre-medicine, Van Eekeren Family Scholarship.
  • Stephanie Greer, Prairie Village, senior, biology, Van Eekeren Family Scholarship.
  • Shannon James, Olathe, sophomore, pre-pharmacy, Veta B. Lear Award.
  • Rachel Luchmun, Olathe, junior, anthropology, Hilden Gibson Scholarship, for a junior student studying in the social sciences, preparing to enter his or her senior year.
  • Todd Morgan, Olathe, sophomore, pre-business/pre-journalism, Van Eekeren Family Scholarship.
  • Teale Muir, Tulsa, Okla., sophomore, pre-pharmacy, Veta B. Lear Award.
  • Jon Nelson, Smolan, senior, sociology, Betty Wahlstedt Scholarship, for undergraduates majoring in psychology, sociology or anthropology.
  • Casey Pederson, Clay Center, senior, psychology, Paul B. Lawson Scholarship, for an outstanding junior student preparing to enter his or her senior year.
  • Kathryn Sobeck, Rocklin, Calif., freshman, biology/pre-medicine, Veta B. Lear Award.
  • Cayla Tate, Ottawa, junior, global and international studies/Spanish, Van Eekeren Family Scholarship.
