Supportive Educational Services to celebrate 40 years at KU

LAWRENCE — TRiO Supportive Educational Services will celebrate 40 years at the University of Kansas during its Recognition and Anniversary Reception from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 10, at the Kansas Union.

Established at KU in 1973, TRiO Supportive Educational Services is a comprehensive academic support program that assists first-generation students, limited-income students and students with disabilities to graduate from college.

“The TRiO Supportive Educational Services at KU has served more than 9,500 students during its 40 years here on campus, and we want to celebrate our success as well as the accomplishments of our students,” said Maritza Machado-Williams, director of TRiO Supportive Educational Services.

TRiO Supportive Educational Services provides tutoring assistance and basic skill instruction in reading, writing, math and science, as well as counseling, financial aid assistance, and graduate school and career planning. It is a federal TRiO program, which is a group of outreach and student services programs that recruit, retain and graduate individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.

During the invitation-only reception, more than 138 students will be recognized for their academic success, including 21 graduating seniors, 15 inductees into the Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society, 79 TRiO Supportive Educational Services Scholars and 23 certified tutors.

“All of our students had some type of academic challenge in order to qualify for our program,” Machado-Williams said. “For some of our students, just being recognized at this level is a huge achievement.”
