Media advisory: Professor can speak about post-traumatic stress, journalists
LAWRENCE — University of Kansas faculty member Barbara Barnett is available to speak about post-traumatic stress disorder in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., school shootings and how the disorder can affect not only those typically involved in traumatic events, but journalists as well.
Barnett, associate professor of journalism and associate dean of undergraduate studies at KU's William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications, can speak about how post-traumatic stress disorder affects journalists who cover traumatic events. While often not considered as potential sufferers of the disorder, journalists are regularly on the front lines of traumatic events, from war to domestic shootings, car accidents and other situations. Barnett recently led a workshop at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on the topic of journalists and post-traumatic stress.
