100th University of Kansas Homecoming set for Oct. 21-27

LAWRENCE – The University of Kansas Alumni Association and the student-led Homecoming Steering Committee, along with campus and community partners, have organized seven days of events Oct. 21-27 to celebrate KU's 100th Homecoming.
The week begins with the Jayhawk Jog at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, on Massachusetts Street. Later that day, Stuff the Bus, a food drive to benefit Just Food, a United Way of Douglas County agency, is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. Donors can bring canned goods and other food items to the Adams Alumni Center, 1266 Oread Ave., or the Dillons store at 1015 W. 23rd St. Participants also can donate using their cell phones by texting JUSTFOOD to 80888 or visiting Just Food. A $10 donation will provide 50 meals for Douglas County residents. Proceeds from the Jayhawk Jog also will benefit the United Way.
Other highlights of the week include:
- Lawrence for Literacy Book Drive, a benefit for United Way, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 22-26 at the Adams Alumni Center
- Homecoming Food Fest and Jayhawk Jingles singing competition from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Adams Alumni Center
- Homecoming Parade at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, from the Chi Omega Fountain to the Adams Alumni Center, followed by a 7 p.m. pep rally at the Alumni Center. The parade grand marshal is Olympic gold medalist Diamond Dixon; the honorary grand marshal is former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole. Diamond, a Houston junior, won her medal at the London Olympics in August as part of the 4 x 400-meter relay team. The parade also will feature the 10 student finalists for the Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership (ExCEL) awards. Two winners, one male and one female, will be announced during halftime of the KU-Texas football game, which begins at 11 a.m. Oct. 27 in Memorial Stadium.
