KU winner of police vehicle design contest
LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas Public Safety Office's partnership with a KU Department of Design class for its new patrol car look has turned out to be a winning combination.
Law and Order magazine recently announced that the design produced by KU students won the "Colleges and Universities" category for the 2012 International Police Vehicle Design Contest.
In March 2011 Jeremy Shellhorn, a KU associate professor of visual communication design in the School of Architecture, Design and Planning, was asked to provide design criteria to interested students. Elements of the designs produced by Andrew Meier, Olathe, and George Ressler, Chesterfield, Mo., were combined to produce the final look, which debuted on KU police cars in August 2011 and featured official Jayhawk colors and the Jayhawk on each side.
The contest's judges commented "The blue highlights the car nicely, different from the traditional black and white design."
There were over 500 entries in all categories for the 2012 contest. There were 17 other entries in the College and University Police category.
