LAWRENCE – Gov. Sam Brownback will present "Economic Growth and Kansas Tax Policy" as the University of Kansas School of Business 2012 Anderson Chandler Lecture at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at the Lied Center.

The event is free and open to the public.

Brownback took office as governor of Kansas in 2011. During his time in office, he has focused his efforts on growing the state's economy, creating jobs and reforming state government.

He was first elected to Congress in 1994, at which time he was selected as head of the New Federalist, a group focused on producing smaller federal government and a balanced budget.

Two years later Kansas elected Brownback to the U.S. Senate seat once held by Bob Dole.

He served as the top-ranking Republican on the Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee, which oversees U.S. Department of Agriculture program, as well as food safety and agencies responsible for protection of public health such as the Food and Drug Administration.

Brownback earned a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics from Kansas State University in 1978 and holds a juris doctorate from the University of Kansas School of Law.

The Anderson Chandler Lecture Series began in 1997 and is made possible by KU School of Business alumnus Anderson Chandler. He is CEO, president and director of Fidelity State Bank and Trust Co. of Topeka. Chandler received the KU Alumni Association's Distinguished Service Citation in 2010 and was one of the first alumni honored with the School of Business Distinguished Alumni Award in 1998.

Chandler established the Anderson W. Chandler Teaching Professorship in Business in 2000 to recognize and encourage excellence in classroom teaching.

Previous Chandler lecturers include financial journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin; Thomas Hoenig, former president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City; Sheila Bair, KU alumna and former FDIC chairwoman; and Alan Mulally, president and CEO of Ford Motor Co.
