KPR receives donation of classical music CD library

More Information

LAWRENCE – Kansas Public Radio’s classical music library will be expanding a little – by 3,700 CDs.

The donation comes from Kansas City’s Radio Bach, Classical 1660AM, which will change its format to an all-business news station March 5. Radio Bach, known for many years as KXTR, is owned by Entercom, which also owns eight other Kansas City radio stations.

“Kansas Public Radio is the perfect partner for this. They will be terrific stewards of classical music in our area,” said Dave Alpert, vice president and general manager of Entercom Kansas City. “When it came to making the decision where to donate our classical music library, it wasn’t a very difficult decision.

“With Kansas Public Radio’s seven signals and an HD station at KPR2, they have a broad and modern platform. We know classical music fans will be in good hands with Kansas Public Radio.”

KPR’s classical music director said the donation would be a great addition to the KPR music library.

“We’re thrilled that the people at Entercom so generously thought to donate the KXTR music library to Kansas Public Radio,” Mark Edwards said. “The addition of these classics to our library will help us in some small way to keep the spirit of KXTR alive here at KPR.”

KPR has an existing CD library of approximately 30,000 discs, of which about 20,000 are classical music. KPR also has about 5,000 vinyl records, primarily jazz and bluegrass LPs that have not been re-issued on CD.

Duplicate CDs will be given to the Audio-Reader benefit sale, For Your Ears Only, which sells donated CDs, LPs, audio products and musical instruments. This year’s sale is Sept. 14-15.

KPR, licensed to the University of Kansas, broadcasts on 91.5 FM in Lawrence, 89.7 FM in Emporia, 91.3 FM in Olsburg-Junction City, 89.9 FM in Atchison, 90.3 FM in Chanute, and 99.5 FM and 97.9 FM in Manhattan. KPR can be heard on the Internet. KPR also operates KPR2, a news-talk channel on HD Radio. Those broadcasts can be heard on an HD receiver or on KPR’s website.
