LAWRENCE – KPR health reporter Bryan Thompson has another award from the American Cancer Society to add to his wall.

Thompson was named a winner in the High Plains Division 2011 Media Awards competition. He won the radio news category for his story “Teaming Up To Fight Rare Blood Cancers,” part of KPR’s ongoing series “Kansas Health: A Prescription for Change.” The story first aired June 6, 2011.

The story explored the collaboration of researchers at the University of Kansas Medical Center with the National Institutes of Health and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to find new medications for some rare blood cancers. The effort centers on repurposing drugs originally intended to treat other diseases. You can listen to the story here.

“I’m honored that the ‘Kansas Health’ report was selected,” Thompson said. “The drug research being done has the potential to save lives someday. It’s a thrill to present this kind of information to KPR listeners.”

The High Plains Division includes Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri and Hawaii.

The American Cancer Society Media Awards began in 1981, recognizing journalists for generating public awareness about cancer prevention, early detection and survivorship.

Thompson’s work was also recognized by the American Cancer Society in 2010.
