LAWRENCE — Hyerim Jeon, a DMA student studying cello performance with Professor Ed Laut, was recently invited to perform a master class with internationally renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma at the new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. The event coincides with a KC Symphony/Yo-Yo Ma concert in January at the Kauffman Center.

Just three advance cello students received the invitation to perform with Ma: one from KU, UMKC and Park University. Jeon will perform her master class at 11 a.m. Jan. 21 at the center’s Helzburg Hall.

“I was disappointed that concert tickets were already sold out for the January Yo-Yo Ma concert at the Kauffman Center, but when Dean Walzel showed me the letter from the Kansas City Symphony inviting me to perform this special master class, I couldn’t believe my eyes,” said Jeon.

Jeon, originally from Seoul, South Korea, received her MM degree in cello performance from KU and is now pursuing a doctoral degree at in the same concentration. She joined the faculty of Washburn University in fall 2011 as adjunct professor of cello and is a member of the Topeka Symphony Orchestra and the St. Joseph Symphony Orchestra. Jeon participated in the 2011 summer music festival with KU in Eutin, Germany, and she will give her final DMA solo recital at KU on April 13.
